Research Paper (A1)
Future teachers will choose an area of assessment to research. They will find 1-2 articles of relevant research related to the area of assessment, and will review these articles. The articles will be summarized and described in a written 5-7 page paper, APA style. Teacher will evaluate its relevance within the special education field, and specifically how it might be used in the classroom setting.
Breakdown of paper as follows:
1. APA Formatted Cover Page
2. Introduction: Begin by addressing the differences between formal and informal assessment as it relates to special education. Specifically, the assessment should be defined in terms of their application to specific subject areas (reading, math, behavioral, etc.)
3. Choose an area of assessment to research: Find 1-2 articles of relevant research related to the type of assessment you are choosing. For ideas about what types of assessment you can research, review Chapter 1 pages 16-24 (nice chart on page 23). Begin this section by discussing your article. Your research should include a definition of the assessment, its potential uses, its effectiveness, when and how it's used.
As you will need a student to complete a case study on for your upcoming papers, think about a student and the type of assessment that would benefit this student for this paper.
4. Complete your paper with your APA style References page.

Administration of Assessments
Future teachers will be monitored while giving specific assessments to their peers in class. They will be observed, and critiqued during the process. They will then need to score the assessment and make recommendations based upon the scores they collect. Assessments may include: Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) component, Curriculum Based Measure (CBM), standardized assessment component (WIAT III).
Case Study Assessment Plan
Step One: Future teachers will develop an assessment plan for a student. For this plan, a student will be selected that they are currently working with. (If no students are available, instructor will provide a case study.) As a component of this process, future teachers will also conduct an observation or interview with a professional familiar with the assessment process. They will discuss the assessment plan. No names of the students can be used, and no personal information.
Step Two: Future teachers will receive their original assessment plans back. Scores for the assessments given will be provided by the instructor as a case study, unless scores are available. Future teachers will write a comprehensive plan to include interpretations of the scores as well as recommendations for classroom accommodations.
*For future teachers with access to student scores, scores may be used to make recommendations. For options students working in field, select assessments may be given.
